This is part of an article from a current
issue of
Residential Lighting:
An Incandescent Truth
My e-mail in-box has been bombarded recently
with people forwarding columns and articles
relating to the impending extinction of the
incandescent bulb as we know it.
No doubt the sudden flurry of attention from
mainstream media on this issue - which has
really been on our industry's radar for quite
some time -
is in direct response to the European Union's
ban on the manufacture and import of 100W and
frosted incandescent bulbs that went into
effect this month.
EU Energy Spokesman Ferran Tarradellas says
the plan to ban all incandescent bulbs in 27
European countries over the next three years
will save an amount of energy equivalent to
the entire electricity consumption of
Romania.
On our shores, Noah Horowitz of the
Natural Resources Defense Council says that
switching all of our light sources from
incandescent to fluorescent would save as
much electricity as is used by all of the
homes in Texas.
Howard M. Brandston, a lighting consultant
whose projects include the relighting of the
Statue of Liberty, gave a particularly
eloquent indictment of the lighting edicts in
the Energy Independence and Security Act of
2007 in the Wall Street Journal recently. He
predicts that public dissatisfaction with
lighting will far outweigh the energy savings
resulting from the Act's requirements.
In the other camp, advocates say it always
takes time to embrace change. In his blog, EU
Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said:
"Much like the car and the telephone took
time to catch on, you will one day appreciate
the new era of lighting."
Sure, but when the car came along, they
didn't ban the horse. And the telephone's
arrival didn't make it illegal to use a
telegraph. These advancements overtook their
predecessors over time because they made life
better and more convenient for the people
that chose to use them. Progress in compact
fluorescent and even LED technology has the
potential to do the same, at least for some
applications, by saving consumers energy and
money.
